Happy First Week of 3rd Grade:

Getting to know our new team and working together!

Our week has been full of new friends and activities. We have been learning about Mrs. Gleason and sharing our stories through our "Me Bags" in order to foster trust and find connections.
We will make mistakes in our community and need to be able to feel safe with Mrs. G and classmates in order to be okay and try again. On the very first day of school, third graders were greeted by a POP quiz (a true or false questionnaire about Mrs. Gleason), after which they learned that Mrs. Gleason would never again put them in a situation in which she expected something from them she hadn't prepared them for first. Ask a third grader about it today!

This week we also took time to learn about each other through new discussion and instructional protocols. We learned how to "Wance," (walking and dancing) during a musical share about us and our favorites and what our "best fit" classroom, teacher, and classmates would be like. Next week we will learn and practice new discussion protocols and define our expectations.

We read
Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell and The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson to discuss self-talk, differences, and character traits. Sometimes we may initially just feel different from others making us feel alienated and alone. However, the day we begin sharing our stories is the day we begin connecting and feeling accepted!
Molly Lou Melon doesn't use any negative self-talk and look what she accomplished! We then brainstormed character traits about ourselves.
As we learn about each other, we have also been asked to learn about ourselves through different activities! We also created an experiment to look at the affect of words; kind and unkind. We will continue to look at this and share our findings!

We also learned the importance of rereading, and how we learn new details and may find new evidence when we reread a book... Or re-watch a movie! Many of us were surprised to see the "pyramid" in the background in this scene of Despicable Me!

A Peek into Next Week:

  • Thank you for participating in homework with us. I know finding time can be tricky. Please help your third grader return the Reading Interview (Green Sheet) by Monday!
  • We will be completing problems solving challenges to work on growth mindset and accountable talk! We will discuss a "healthy struggle!"
  • NWEA MAP Tests are approaching... Look for dates to come!
  • We will continue to work on our reading stamina, visualizing, and IDR (Individualized Daily Reading)!
  • Learning about the first "trait" of kindness: cooperation! What does it look like and how does it show kind behavior?
